Following the lead of Facebook’s Instant Articles, which will soon be available to publishers large & small, Apple has decided to invite everybody dedicating their time to writing content online to the company’s newsreader app.
Apple News is now expanding beyond its initial 100 or so publishers, allowing anyone with a news-centric website or blog to publish to the app, via either the company’s own web-based editing tool or an RSS-style feed.
Publishers on Apple News can sell their own advertising and keep 100% of the revenue, or run iAd advertisements on their content for a 70/30 rev-share with the company.
Apple is also introducing an analytics dashboard for Apple News publishers—an area that has been cited as a point of frustration for many of the major publications already signed-up for the newsreader.
Making Apple News available for a wider-range of publishers is the second big announcement for the product this week: as reported on Tuesday, Apple News is also getting its own native advertising this month. Both changes come as the company is expected to unveil, among other hardware releases, the new 4-inch iPhone SE next week.
As with Facebook Instant Articles, there is a WordPress plugin available to help facilitate WP-based sites’ feeds onto Apple News, once the website owner has signed up (and been approved by) Apple News Publisher. WPTavern has detailed this process for WordPress publishers, which can be found here.
