The Wu-Tang Clan’s marketing strategies as of late are either brilliant– or, insane. Depends who you ask.
As part of a promotion for the group’s 20 anniversary LP A Better Tomorrow, the Wu will be teaming up with Bluetooth speaker manufacturer Boombotix to make 3,000 “Boombot REX” units available to the public, each containing 8 songs, one of which will not be actually featured on the LP.
This, of course, isn’t the first interesting promo the Wu has done in 2014. If you recall, earlier this year, the group released just a single copy of their The Wu – Once Upon a Time in Shaolin album (which reportedly sold for millions), which is intended to only be listened to at museums & festivals. 51 seconds of the album has been released to Forbes, but so far, that’s all that is available to the public.
The Wu-Tang’s undeniable leader, The RZA, had this to say about the new project:
“There’s something transcendent about being able to physically hold music. Back in the day, holding a vinyl helped you appreciate just how much time and sweat goes into creating a single track, let alone an entire album. Over the last decade, we’ve lost that sensation. With this project, we hope to strengthen the bond between fan and artist. Boombotix puts the music back in your hands so you can stay connected to your favorite artists wherever you go.”
It is certainly an interesting concept, though I’m not convinced the market for an additional product to carry around is very large (then again, at only 3,000 total, they’ll likely sell out).
Looking to pre-order the Wu-Tang Clan’s Boombot REX? The company has 1,000 of them available now. If you do end up grabbing one, how about doing the rest of us a favor & uploading that single exclusive track, yeah?
