While there wasn’t much to talk about out of the Southside this past baseball season (Paulie’s retirement tribute notwithstanding), White Sox fans will never forget the sensational season that Cuban-born rookie Jose Abreu enjoyed. In the year-plus since news of a potential Abreu signing shook hibernating Sox fans from their slumber, the former Cuba MVP has certainly gave us one hell of a show.
Just how good was Jose Abreu in his first season? In addition to being named to the All-Star team this past summer, Abreu took home Rookie of the Month honors three of six months, was named Player of the Month in April & July, and was Sporting News’ choice for Rookie of the Year.
Now, in addition to these accolades (and the .317 avg. & 36 HRs), Jose Abreu has been awarded the distinction of unanimous choice for AL Rookie of the Year by the Baseball Writers Association.
Not a bad start.
The White Sox certainly have their work cut out for them this offseason, including finding ANYONE that can help out Chris Sale from the bullpen. Still, as “re-starts” go, following the departure of Konerko, this one ain’t that bad at all.
