Beginning in two weeks, some of the reported 15 million Apple Music users with Sonos speakers will finally have the capability to use the two together.
Sonos announced today that a beta with Apple Music would kick-off on December 15th. The beta comes at the perfect time—given it’s the holiday shopping season & all—but also meets both companies’ previously-disclosed integration timeline of the end of 2015.
The Sonos music app already supports most of the top streaming services—including Pandora, Spotify, Tidal, and the soon-defunct Rdio—and integrating with Apple Music showcases not only Sonos’ willingness to extend their capabilities, but Cupertino’s eagerness to co-operate with third-party hardware vendors. Given Apple is still offering three-month free trials for new subscribers, this arrangement with Sonos provides an additional means of acquiring new users outside of iPhone & iPad sales.
People with family accounts on Apple Music will be able to add up to six of these to their Sonos experience, allowing for users to share playlists and songs on the same speakers.
While the Sonos/Apple Music integration will start as a beta, owners of the company’s speakers can sign up here to be part of the initial test group. Sonos is asking beta testers to provide feedback on their experience, to create improvements before Apple Music launches for everyone. Full availability for all Sonos owners should be here in early 2016.
