When news of two confirmed cast members for season 2 of True Detective broke on Twitter this week (because, that’s where all stories break), there was some, well, strong reaction.
Some said that the casting of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell was a mistake. Some felt that Vaughn could never pull off the dramatic role. Some…well, some said this:
HBO knows #TrueDetective isn’t obligated to employ stars in need of career comebacks, right?

As a big fan of the first season of the HBO anthology, I (like many of you) was hoping (though not expecting) that the network was pulling our leg– and Woody Harrelson & Matthew McConaughey would reprise, in some form, their legendary roles.
No such luck.
But unlike some tweets I saw after HBO released the news of Farrell and Vaughn joining the cast (which basically wrote off season 2 all-together), I’m far less skeptical of the pairing. In fact, admittedly– I’m very much looking forward to True Detective‘s return.
Sure, I could envision dozens of actors & actresses who could step into the roles of “a compromised detective” and “a career criminal” (Farrell & Vaughn’s characters, respectively, according to HBO); but, based on the action & writing that Nic Pizzolatto brought us last January, I’m not going to question it.
Nope…instead, like many of you, I’ll be waiting in anticipation to find out when season 2 of True Detective will air (January again?). I’ll be waiting to see what female starts the show will cast. And, mostly, I’ll be waiting to see how Vaughn, Farrell, and the rest of the season 2 cast gels, and compares, to the magic we saw in the show’s rookie year.
What are your thoughts of Vince Vaughn and Colin Farrell joining season 2 of True Detective? Does it have any impact on your excitement level? Let me know what you think, and we can argue our unsubstantiated opinions together!
