‘Breaking Bad’ is gone. We’ll have to wait until Spring for ‘Mad Men‘ & ‘Game of Thrones’. That depressing news aside, 2014 could shape up to be even better year in television than ’13 was. Don’t believe me? Check out what’s looking to be quality entertainment on TV in 2014 during the Winter months and decide for yourself.
Winter TV Watch 2014
Personally, the show I’m most excited about to premiere in 2014 is the Woody Harrelson/Matt McConnaughey crime drama ‘True Detective’. This 8-episode anthology is already sparking talks in the media world as having the potential to earn award nods to both leads, and, since it is HBO, I can only have high hopes for what this series can bring to the table. Of course, it could be another ‘Luck’….but, let’s not go there. ‘True Detective’ premieres on January 12th.
Another highly-anticipated miniseries set to debut on the IFC network in January is the “Funny or Die” produced ‘Spoils of Babylon’, which packs a powerhouse of a cast including Kristen Wiig, Tim Robbins, Tobey McGuire, Jessica Alba, Haley Joel Osment, and Val Kilmer, among others. This mock-miniseries looks quite funny, and should help lighten up your mood during the chilly months ahead. ‘Spoils of Babylon’ premieres January 9th.
In “major sporting event” news (and, no, I don’t mean the SuperBowl), NBC will be hosting the Winter Olympics from Sochi, Russia beginning on February 7th, running through close to the end of the month.
For fans of ‘Chicago Fire’ (you’d think I’d be…but honestly, haven’t seen a single episode), NBC is premiering the spin-off, aptly-named ‘Chicago PD’. The previews do look interesting, and I’m in the market for a new crime drama, so it might be worth a look. ‘Chicago PD’ will air beginning January 8th.
Critics are also talking about the new Fox sitcom ‘Enlisted’, premiering January 10th. Myself, I haven’t been excited much for sitcoms in quite some time, but the early reviews are promising, so it might be worth a spot on your DVR.
Fox is also debuting a new dramady with Greg Kinnear on January 23rd called ‘Rake’, which, essentially, is being billed as “‘House’ in a courtroom”. Honestly, I’m skeptical– ‘House’ was one of my top ten favorites, after all; but, I may give it a chance. It’s going to be a long Winter…
Finally, there’s some returning favorites this Winter 2014, including:
- ‘Justified’ (Jan. 2nd)
- ‘Psych’ (Jan. 8th)
- ‘AHS: Coven’ (Jan. 8th)
- ‘Archer’ (Jan. 13th)
- ‘The Following’ (Jan 21st)
- ‘The Walking Dead’ (Feb. 9th)
- ‘House of Cards’ (Feb. 14th)
- Jimmy Fallon will take over as host of “The Tonight Show” on Feb. 17th
- ‘Late Night w/ Seth Meyers’ (Feb. 24th)
- ‘Hannibal’ (Feb. 28th)
